Chicago 3/20 The Independent's Day Tour

Showing love for my peep VivaFidel and in solidarity with indie hip hop...

The story here is this - the exploitation of the independent artists has long been an epidemic. We've been hearing the same songs on major radio for years and while everyone is fed up - people are uniformed and artists remain unprotected. This is another effort to keep momentum going, to share information and renew inspiration among the artists and the community that supports them. Word.

Support... create...here's the details. :)

Two Times The Charm As Chameleon Street Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Contact:

Two Times the Charm for Filmmaker Wendell B. Harris, Jr. and Chameleon Street
Critically-acclaimed film celebrates 20th Anniversary with a return to Sundance Film Festival

CHICAGO - January 2009 Writer/director Wendell B. Harris, Jr. embarks on the first leg of a year-long celebration of the 20-year anniversary of his critically acclaimed film, Chameleon Street, with a return to the Sundance Film Festival, held annually in Park City, Utah. In 1990, Chameleon Street was awarded the Grand Jury Prize, beating out all contenders for the festival's top award.

Chameleon Street is a psychological comedy that uses the real-life story of Douglas Street, an infamous Michigan-born imposter, to explore the myth of the American Dream, the paradox of African-American male identity and the ability of the movie medium to get beneath the skin of American Society.

2009 is a major marker for Harris, Jr., while Sundance celebrates its own 25-year anniversary of honoring independent film, the festival organizers have invited Harris and his award-winning film to be among the two films shown each year in the Sundance Collection. For the 2009 festival, Chameleon Street and sex, lies and videotape were chosen as this year’s entries.

In addition to the festival, Wendell B. Harris, Jr. and his team will unveil several initiatives designed to leverage the cult-status the film has maintained over the years within the global Hip Hop community. Although the film was largely ignored by Hollywood after the 1990 win, sampling of the film by hip hop artists, Mos Def and Talib Kweli for their 1999 debut album entitled, Black Star helped to keep underground "cred" for the film authentic. The transparent ties to the "golden era" hip hop community allows for bolder steps into a brave new marketing world for the Chameleon Street brand, including social networking and guerilla marketing tactics.

"I am deeply inspired by the younger folks who have taken a liking to the film due to the recognition that Mos and Talib provided with Brown Skin Lady," said Wendell B. Harris, Jr. "When the time came to reintroduce Chameleon Street to fans and to engage the next generation who would breath new life into this film, I needed to deploy a younger, tech-savvy segment of professionals who could take my film in-world, underground and outer limits."

Newer and established fans of Chameleon Street will be treated to a virtual world of experiences as 2009 flows in. Those curious about the little film that Hollywood forgot and the people revived will be able to share in the experience, by visiting one or more of the online hubs for a little cloak and dagger of their own.

The Artists Who Helped Me Live Through 2008

We've been calling 2008 "Hump Year"... it's never been more real and folks are feeling it. I know I am.

But the music...helps soothe the pain everytime.

In no particular order than the vibration I was on when I copied and pasted the links... I present the artists who musically saved Fox's life in 2008.

Disclaimer: If you are looking for one of those lists that's got stuff on the radio in it - you might as well go now before you get scared or bored or turned off.
:) It's all good - thanks for stopping by.

EHEM...

SIA - lord have mercy, she makes me cry, smile and wanna free the singer I know lives deep inside me. Ha. And then I wake up.

ERYKAH BADU - The Queen Goddess of Life the Remix.
That Pisces is one of the best ever. Put her up there on the shelf with Aretha, and Billie and Gladys and them...she don't have to hang with the up and comers anymore. There's no competition. E. Badu - Honorarily Soul-Degreed. lol

DEF POETRY

NASIR JONES - baby... I love the N*gger Album. The truth was beyond a resonable doubt. They should have left the name as is and let the music be the statement. But eh... it's not my world.

BREATHE...whoooooooo

LITTLE DRAGON
Absolutely the best music I heard all year. Yukimi and the hairy White dudes from Sweden are fuckin' fresh to death. They are so dope, they get a double play.
If you love music, for the pureness of what it is - you will absolutely fall in love with little dragon.

No 808s allowed this time. Open up and cry if you need to. It's beautiful...

This next addition is a true and personal one... Allegra Dolores, Africa Hot and that hot ass Room 11 are a real part of my life. Moments like this little snippet represent my musical reality, here in Chicago and what we hope to take to the world.
Soon.. the time comes. Remember the names... you'll be asking for it soon.
Just a moment in time at a live set... I hope you enjoy.

I've spent alot of the year reflecting on songs from the recent past that stayed with me as I grew. Three names: Yahzarah - Little Brother - Foreign Exchange. Timeless.

And Q-Tip brought Hip Hop back... it has been a great year for taking it back to the golden time of the day. Renaissance is gon' get play years from now!

No one can take from me that which I am - and so on constant replay this was a personal favorite from a set rapper who's from a crew that never got the love they should have. This is not your grandmomma's Negro Spiritual.

STYLES P - I'M BLACK
of course he couldn't make a video... This shit is corny but I'll take what I can get. :) This is an anthem.

So yeah.. we're at the end of the ride for 2008 - I can't wait to see what's to come. I'm poised for my karma and my work to move me to the next level. I'm gon' kick off the march toward 2009 with my new mantra music as I soar through this beeyatch!

iO Chicago Theater & Jameeleh Shelo Present: MY AMERICAN COUSIN

Happy recovery from the mass indulgence and celebration of Thanks-Taking-From-A-Native Day. In other cultural sensitivity news....

iO Chicago Theater Presents New Sketch Comedy Show My American Cousin
One-Woman show offers a hilarious peek inside the American Middle Eastern Muslim experience

(Chicago, IL) iO Chicago Theater and Jameeleh Shelo celebrate the next foray into the sketch comedy arena with a hilarious new show that offers another look at American Middle Eastern Muslim life.

My American Cousin is a one woman sketch comedy show written and performed by Jameeleh Shelo, and directed by Min-aha Beeck. The show is a unique view into the life of an American Middle Eastern Muslim woman from the south side of Chicago, as she navigates her way through cultural pressures and societal assumptions. From arranged marriages to 9/11 and Ramadan to the age old question, “why are most cabbies from the Middle East?” nothing is off-limits.

What can I expect to see in My American Cousin?

Photobucket

Heard of speed dating? Sit in on a speed arranged marriage. Meet the suitors and decide “which one should I marry?” because you have about 20 seconds to decide. Meet Becky Bin Laden from Grand Folks, Minnesota as she reads her hate mail and explains her family tree, including all 52 aunts and uncles, one who happens to have the first name Osama, but don’t worry she’s “stopped sending him the family newsletter.

Take a breather with your favorite Iraqi stand-up comedian, Fallujah Girl, who asks “What is the difference between a tree and my family? The tree wasn’t murdered in its bed while it slept! I
kid! I kid!” but is she? Get a bit of Ramadan education from your local Sheikh as he answers abstinence questions like “how many fingers can you use before it’s technically considered a hand job?”

Participate in an ad agency meeting where the topic of the day is restoring the good name of Middle Easterners post 9/11. New ad slogans like “We drive cabs because it’s safer than flying!” are sure to win America back.

These are only snippets of what you will discover inside My American Cousin. If you didn’t know any Middle Easterners before this show...well you still won’t know any after, but you will have been entertained by one for forty-five minutes which leads you to wonder: What have any Samoans done for me lately?

Condolences to Jennifer Hudson

Condolences to Jennifer Hudson on the tragedy gripping her family right now.
When will we begin to understand the bigger picture and the ramifications of the taking of a life?

from the Chicago Tribune...

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The mother and brother of Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Hudson were found shot to death in the mother's Chicago home on Friday, media reported.

The Chicago Tribune said one of the victims was Hudson's mother, Darnell Donnerson. The entertainment website TMZ, citing a neighbor, said Hudson's brother Jason also was found dead.

A cousin who lived nearby discovered the bodies, TMZ said. The Tribune, quoting police, said the killings may be linked to a domestic disturbance.

The Chicago Police Department confirmed two people were found shot to death at the residence and said it was "being investigated as a homicide." But police did not release the identities of the victims or other details.

Other media reports said a 7-year-old boy, also a family member, was taken from the scene and that police had issued an alert for him.

Hudson won an Academy Award for her role in "Dream Girls."

For You, The Soul-less

If I go to another event in Chicago, hosted by, catered to or featuring anymore uptight people who don't like music - yet who insist upon crowding into all the enviable seating at almost EVERY live music event - I'm gonna die a death slower than this run on sentence.

Stiff, stick-in-the-mud, discount elitist, scene whores.

One of the main reasons I exist primarily online is because of the high level of high level wackness at the live events in my home-Chi-town.
Go out... for what? "They" will be there, infecting the moment with their insecurity.

Yeah... I know what you're thinking.. hell yeah I'm mad.

I am a friend to the musicianship in Chicago - and I can't believe the lameness of the of some of the "party people" here. Socialites with no social skills seeking solace in the falsehood of life.

These people who you get dressed up to go stare at - practice and develop raw talent to bring you something finer than you deserve.

And I know there's something to this, because each show.. there's more and more of you. You and your smirks...are now a legion of many. Every show.

Why Do You Come If You Don't Like Music? Why did YOU come?

You make me ill... only giving up energy to that monotonous bullshit on the radio. If there had been an Umbrella song or a song from some soft nigga singing about a Bed or some Falsetto...every pair of designer shoes would have been moving those drunk feet around.

I'm sick of the only people giving up the love during the show being other artists...crowded around the door or sitting on the floor while you post up your ugliness. Move your haut ass out of the way and let someone who can appreciate the moment have that space.

Seriously.. having to mingle with you has me seriously considering an AA meeting. Do yourself a favor.. if you don't like music - stick to the meet n greets, or find somewhere else to stare.

If I had a nickel for every time an artist said "thank God yall came"...I'd be rich.
Do you have any idea what it's like for a person to get up in front of YOU and give the way they do?

You rotten apples.
Step up your social skills or save all that dust for the golf course.

I'm always defending Chicago in conversation with artists who feel like saying fuck it and leaving home...telling them, no man... it's just the crowd at this spot. or that spot. Home is where the finest meals are cooked...

My days of making excuses are making me tired and angry...
Fux wrong with yall?

Does every great artist from Chicago have to leave Chicago in order to feel the warmth of the word against the soul?

Maybe if we made it a "membership" and didn't let yall in - you'd get your shit together.

UGH.

Top 10 reasons Sex is IN the City

If you know me... then you knew it was coming.

The Top 10 things I loved most of all about Sex and the City the movie.
(without ruining it for you who haven't seen it)

10.  The Fashion - The fashion - the fashion.

8. If you never watched the show... they took good care of you bringing you up to speed.

7. But only if your black ass wasn't late for the movie.

6. Jennifer Hudson is the new black girl stereotype.
I'll take that one, bcuz it has taken toooo long to undo those things that the GirlFriends did.

Photobucket

Watch for the slowwww steady changes in the sisters... mark my words.  Femininity will be back in style.. but watch for sisters and older white men.  (just watch.. and gimme my propers when it manifests)

Photobucket

5. A side shot of a nice cock.
Every movie needs one.  I don't need to elaborate - do I?

4.  I don't care what the finger pointers say... those 4 are my favorite white women of the 21st century.

3. The lone black man - was a fine one.
Thank GAWD.

2.  There are at least 5 or 6 moments to cry for...

1.  Love Hater - Hater of Love... Allegra cried.
And this is for her when she reads this and finds out I outed her.
